FRESH START COMMUNITY CENTRE
Brighton, Sussex - Renovation of community Centre and provision of new apartments
We were appointed in 2020 to enhance the existing community centre facilities, maximising the use of the existing building, while creating new dwellings within the existing residential element. This approach seeks to optimise the use of the existing building and support the long-term sustainability of the work that Fresh Start Community Association and Thumbprint Foundation undertake. This will help to ensure it can continue to serve the local community at a higher capacity, within the context of a high-quality and contextually sensitive design. The proposed development is important to the Association in order to deliver important upgrades to the facilities and services that can be provided on site.

The design incorporates thermal massing to regulate internal temperatures and naturally cool the dwelling during the summer months. Passive cross ventilation ensures consistent airflow, reducing reliance on mechanical systems. The single-storey span enabled the use of pre-fabricated construction, which minimises material waste and streamlines the build process. A fabric-first approach has been adopted, with high levels of insulation and airtightness to maximise energy efficiency and deliver long-term energy savings.
