SELF BUILD HOUSE

Mendip Hills, Cheddar - Somerset

We were appointed in 2025 to secure planning permission for a new dwelling within Cheddar. Designed as a long-term family dwelling and part of a wider lifestyle-led rural regeneration project.

  • Net-zero carbon design with emphasis on natural materials and low-impact construction.

  • Intended as precedent and design blueprint for future dwellings on the site - establishing quality, tone, and sustainability standards for subsequent plots.

  • Site context:

    • Located within Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

    • Part of Mendip Hills Landscape Character Area.

    • Flood Zone 1.

    • Not within a Conservation Area or SSSI.

    • No nearby Listed Buildings.

  • The design incorporates thermal massing to regulate internal temperatures and naturally cool the dwelling during the summer months. Passive cross ventilation ensures consistent airflow, reducing reliance on mechanical systems. The single-storey span enabled the use of pre-fabricated construction, which minimises material waste and streamlines the build process. A fabric-first approach has been adopted, with high levels of insulation and airtightness to maximise energy efficiency and deliver long-term energy savings.
